Pellet Stoves Compared: Heating Area, Hopper Size, Burn Time and Venting

A pellet stove feeds itself: an auger moves pellets from the hopper to the burn pot, fans supply air and push heat into the room, and controls hold the setting. That convenience runs on household power, so a standard pellet stove stops in a power cut unless it has a battery backup or generator the maker allows.

Hopper size decides how often you refill; makers state it in pounds, often with a burn time at the lowest setting. Pellet stoves usually vent through a smaller pipe than a wood stove, often out through a wall, with the vent type and route set by the manual.
